SHORT Excursions Ex-Nairobi

SE 001 – NAIROBI CITY TOUR

The tour covers the modern city centre, the National Museum and the adjacent Snake Park, Parliament Buildings, the Railway Museum where old steam locomotives are exhibited including the one from which Superintendent John Lyall was taken from by a man-eating lion in Tsavo in 1901. You will also visit the city market where a wide variety of African curios and tropical fruit and flowers are on sale, ending with a visit to the Kenyatta International Conference Centre viewpoint, which has a revolving restaurant.

SE 002 – KAREN BLIXEN & GIRAFFE CENTER

Drive towards Ngong Hills to the Karen Blixen Museum of the ‘Out of Africa’ fame, which was for many years her home. Later proceed to the Giraffe Centre to see and feed the famous Rothschild’s giraffe, which is the most endangered species, from a specially constructed viewing platform.

SE 003- DAVID SCHELDRICK ORPHANAGE & MAMBA VILLAGE

David Sheldrick Orphanage is famous as a rehabilitation center that takes care of abandoned and injured baby elephants and black rhinos until they are ready to be released back into the wilderness. It is open daily at 11 am up to 12:30 pm whereby you will get a golden chance to see feeding of the baby elephants. It is worth to visit and see humanitarian care given to the wildlife and the heart it takes to care as you share in the feeding and touching of the orphaned elephants and Rhinos.  Afterwards, proceed to mamba village, the home of crocodiles and ostrich, have a chance to feed them and if you like a boat ride and fishing can be organized at an extra cost

SE 004- NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK

The tour starts early morning or in the afternoon. The Nairobi national park which is only 8km from the city center, is Nairobi’s pride, for no other city in the world can boast a paradise of wildlife on its doorstep. Despite its proximity, several species of animals can be found there, including three of the big five, which can be spotted on a lucky day.

SE 005 – BOMAS OF KENYA

A ‘Boma’ is a homestead and just a few kilometers from Nairobi we have the Bomas of Kenya where the day-to-day lives of the 43 different ethnic groups in Kenya are depicted through traditional dancing, music, song and folklore. These plus an acrobatic show are performed in a splendid arena.

SE 006 – CARNIVORE EXPERIENCE FOR LUNCH OR DINNER

Nairobi has many restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisine. We recommend a dinner or lunch at the Carnivore, which is famous for its succulent steaks and barbecue dishes including game meat and is therefore dubbed ‘the meat eaters’ paradise. The restaurant also offers a vegetarian menu. The meal is an excellent complement to a holiday especially as a welcome or farewell dinner.

SE 007 – Thika THIKA SPECIAL (½ Day)

Thika town is 45kms from the city centre and within the town you find the Blue Posts Hotel. The hotel was first established in 1908 as a stopover for the white settlers who farmed and lived in the central part of the country on their way out and back to the city. During the Second World War in 1939 the British Army camped on the site and built up a few bandas whose posts they were standing on were painted blue and this is where the name Blue Posts originated. Today, two rivers, namely the Thika River and Chania River, each with a natural waterfall, surround the hotel popularly known as the ‘Hidden Jewel of Thika’. Both rivers originate from the Aberdare Ranges, though from different sources.

SE 008 – LAKE NAIVASHA TOUR (1 Day)

Leave Nairobi City and drive westwards stopping at the viewpoint on the Great Rift Valley. From here you can see Lake Naivasha sparkling in the sun thousands of feet below. Then proceed to Lake Naivasha. Arrive for lunch at one of the various hotels and resorts at the shores of the Lake. After Lunch you can have a boat ride to the Crescent Island where you can take walks among the herds of Animals or just relax and kill the rest of the afternoon relaxing away from hustle and bustle of the City. Return to Nairobi late in the afternoon.

N.B. Crescent Island is one of the few places in Africa where you can wander on foot among herds of Zebra, Wildebeest, Gazelle, and Giraffe, because of the absence of predators.

SE 009 – LAKE NAKURU TOUR (1Day)

Lake Nakuru National Park tour is a trip down the Rift Valley escarpments with a scenic view of the Great Rift Valley en route. It is one of the most scenic parks in East Africa; a bird and rhino sanctuary and is home to a wide range of animals, the only notable exception being the elephant. The lake is also a bird watcher’s paradise with 400 known species having been spotted here. Vegetation ranges from savannah to various indigenous forests. A world heritage site, Lake Nakuru is most famous for the breath taking sight of its million plus flamingos population joined into a massive flock or pulsating pink swathe of live carpet on water. Return to Nairobi early in the evening.

010 – MT.KENYA/ SWEET WATER GAME RESERVE (1Day)

Depart from Nairobi at 6am. Drive through Thika across the pineapple plantations arriving at the Ol Pajeta game reserve at around 10am. Game drive inside the Game Reserve. Lunch at the Sweet Water Tented Camp. Afternoon drive back to Nairobi arriving in the evening.

SE 011 – AMBOSELI EXPRESS (1 Day)

Amboseli National Park lies within the shadow of the mighty Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain whose peak may be seen from the park on clear day. Only nature and all her majesty could create such a back -drop to the wildlife pageant found at Amboseli. Game is seen en-route to the park, which crosses plains where the Masai tribesmen tend their cattle in an age-old tradition. Lunch is taken at a lodge within the park, followed by another game drive where lion, cheetah can be seen, as well as elephants and hippo that are found bathing in the swamp grounds that get their waters from Mt. Kilimanjaro. Return to Nairobi in good time for dinner.
